Hypothetical Kate...

Who is Kate? She's the woman on the campuses of New Zealand.

She's culturally savvy - of course, she's grown up in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural world. She is independent and self defining. Her friends were born all over the world and she has ambitions to visit everywhere. She is slightly embarrassed by her lack of geographical knowledge. She's suspicious of authority figures - politics and politicians are a joke, government is a waste of time and money: it's boring at best and deeply depressing most days. Britney and Paris are more entertaining; she's embarrassed that she thinks like that. She's interested in fashion, justice, coffee, Bebo, protesting the war in Iraq, music and is thinking through her career path. Her parents were born overseas, her siblings were born here. She's a Kiwi but she's not defined by that. She likes comfort and beauty. Kumara chips with sour cream are her favourite comfort food. She despises fake people. She likes a laugh, especially at fake people. She wears sunscreen the year round. She hopes no one sees through her tough exterior. She knows 'The Treaty' is important and accepts that poltical correctness is a necesary evil. She doesn't like corporate culture. She won't take crap from anyone, and has no interest in religion. Spirituality is cool - Buddhism intrigues her, Maori spirituality is part of her whakapapa (she's kiwi) and she is fine with anyone believing anything as long as they don't hassle her with it. She's trim-soy-flat-white, not latte. She loves the beach and the bach; she lives for the summer. She's proud that Kiwi's don't take crap. She is slightly suspicious of other ethnic groups, but that isn't racist. She loves coffee, she HATES starbucks; she'd rather go cold turkey than take starbucks coffee. She hates it when the Ozzies behave like New Zealand is small and insignificant; the English and Americans can keep it to themselves too. Fish and chips makes her smile - it's childhood wrapped in paper. She felt like crying when the All Blacks went out of the world cup. She wishes she knew the words to the national anthem. She hates nationalism. She went to church once, for a friend's mum's funeral; she has no plans on returning - not even for a funeral. She's never seen a kiwibird and doesn't get the fuss about kiwifruit. Auckland makes her claustrophobic; she'd hate to live anywhere else but hopes to have a lifestyle plot when she finds the right partner - when she is OLDER. She thinks marriage is absurd. She thinks family should be close but not controlling. She hopes. She wonders. She thinks.

We wonder: how to break into the world of hypothetical kate with the real good news of Jesus?...
